Polaris® Industries emerged in 1945, when World War II was at an end and metal production was increasing. A small business named Hetteen Hoist & Derrick created machines to assist farmers. The nature of this work was seasonal, so the men behind the company spent their off-season adventuring in the outdoors. Due to the snow, people needed skis or snowshoes to travel the distance needed to go hunting and fishing. The men collaborated to create a better way to travel the snow and built a snowmobile. It was intended for their personal use, but there grew an interest in their contraption. The creators decided to build more of them and the legend began.

By 1960, the company had been renamed Polaris®. The name originates from the brightest star in the Ursa Minor constellation, which is also known as the North Star. The Polaris® star appears to stand still while others seem to move around it, making it a useful landmark for navigation. 

Polaris® had created hundreds of snowmobiles to meet growing customer demand. There was a big spike in the market boom, which created a need for more management skills for the company to keep up. Polaris sold itself to Textron, which helped them gain steady growth. In the 1970s, there were 63 snowmobile manufacturers. The industry experienced an unfortunate decline and only 3 manufacturers remained in the 1980s, with Polaris standing strong.

Textron wanted to sell Polaris® because it was facing company liquidation and a plant shutdown. The president of Polaris® at the time decided to buy out the company and quit Textron. Polaris only had 100 workers at the time, but they had a fierce dedication to return the company to its former glory. They were able to pay off the Textron debt ahead of schedule and began growing. In 1984, they released the first Polaris ATV. In 1990, they became the first major US firm to develop a personal watercraft. The company's continued focus on innovation and quality helped them become a major player in the powersports world.
