A History of Yamaha

For decades, the Yamaha Motor Company has made a name for itself with their dozens of different vehicle models. They provide easy, fast transport options that go where cars and trucks simply can’t. Yamaha powersports machines are extremely popular due to their durability and reliability. In The Beginning

This manufacturing company has its beginnings in 1887 in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. Founder Torakusu Yamaha started out his enterprise as a producer of musical instruments, particularly organs and pianos. This legacy is reflected in the company’s logo, which depicts a circle of three piano-tuning forks woven together.


The company flourished up to World War II, when an economic downturn forced many Japanese companies to diversify their product lines to repurpose wartime manufacturing machines and make up for lost profits. Genichi Kawakami was the head of the venture at this time, so he pushed the company towards producing small engines for motorcycles.

The Yamaha Motor Company was spun off from the greater corporation in 1955, becoming its powersports-centered American counterpart. Rapid success followed the release of its two-stroke engine motorcycles. Further updates to designs led to the release of four-stroke engine motorcycles in 1968.

Later Expansion

Following their success as a motorcycle producer, Yamaha entered the land-based off-highway vehicle market as well as the marine-based personal watercraft market. Their legendary WaveRunner® 500 saw release in 1986 and became a defining model for marine recreational vehicles.


Throughout the 1990s, further PWC and all-terrain vehicles rolled off the motor company’s assembly lines and saw international acclaim for their innovative designs. They’ve continued to hold sway over the land and marine recreational vehicle markets into the 21st century, with their land-based vehicles becoming popular racing machines. All of their designs have gone through a number of changes to make them sleeker, lighter and more agile than ever before, too.
